# This Week's Case: The Death of Lauren Smith-Fields

Bridgeport, Connecticut — December 2021
Lauren Smith-Fields was 23 years old. Full of life, recently on a first date arranged through the dating app Bumble — the kind of ordinary Saturday night thousands of young women have every week.
By Sunday morning, she was gone.
On December 12, 2021, Lauren was found unresponsive in her Bridgeport apartment by the man she'd met on the app just hours earlier, Matthew LaFountain. He called 911 and attempted chest compressions, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later ruled her death an accidental overdose — a mix of fentanyl and alcohol.
That might have been the end of the story. It wasn't.
What followed was a public fight for answers that Lauren's family says never should have had to happen — a fight over how her death was investigated, who was questioned (and who wasn't), and why they learned about their daughter's death from a note taped to her apartment door instead of a phone call from police.
It's a case that raises hard questions many of us don't want to sit with — about how missing and deceased Black women are treated by the systems meant to protect them, about what "closure" really looks like when the answers keep changing, and about a second Bridgeport woman, Brenda Lee Rawls, who died the very same day under eerily similar silence.
