On the morning of November 4, 2018, a 40-year-old mother of five was found dead in the backyard of a Cumming, Georgia home — the morning after a neighborhood sleepover party she had attended with friends.

Her name was Tamla Horsford.

Within hours, Forsyth County investigators would rule her death an accident: an alcohol-related fall from a second-story balcony. No crime scene processing. No toxicology results awaited. No interviews conducted with the people who had been in that home with her just hours before.

Tamla's family never accepted that conclusion — and once the details began to surface publicly, neither did thousands of people across the country.

Who Was Tamla Horsford?

Tamla was a wife, a mother, and by all accounts, someone who lit up every room she walked into. She was the kind of person people describe as full of life. She had five children, a supportive husband — Marcus Horsford — and a community that loved her.

She was also one of the only Black women at that party.

That fact, combined with a rushed investigation, sealed evidence that was later found to contain inconsistencies, and witness accounts that shifted over time, turned what authorities called an open-and-shut accident into one of the most scrutinized cases in recent Georgia history.
